Around The NFL

– Well, the fallout has already began from the NFL over reacting to a handful of hits this past Sunday. Here are some quotes from some NFL players –

Brian Urlacher – “It’s freaking football. There are going to be big hits. I don’t understand how they can do this after one weekend of hitting. And I can’t understand how they can suspend us for it. I think it’s a bunch of bull. You know what we should do? We should just put flags on everybody. Let’s make it the NFFL – the National Flag Football League. It’s unbelievable.”

Steve Breaston (A WR!) – “Say it’s third-and-15 and you go across the middle. As a defender, you try to dislodge that ball so he doesn’t make the catch. Now, it’s what, you let them catch it? You make the tackle, but they pick up the first down? I don’t know.”

Antrel Rolle – “It’s fine for the offensive players but I’m on the defensive side of the ball. So are you telling me that now I have to slow down? I think we’re already being cautious of what we’re doing and how we’re attacking the ball or how we’re trying to make a tackle. I think that’s absolutely ridiculous because under any circumstances you can’t just absolutely have control over your body when you’re pursuing a tackle.

I’ve bolded my favorite quote which is from Phillip Daniels, DE for the Redskins.

“Have we become a cupcake league? We already have better helmets and gear. Wonder how the old school players feel about this. Not in the back of minds when talking about 18 game season so let’s play football please….Even guys using shoulders to hit are getting flagged for helmet-to-helmet. Defense is getting sloppy because guys are avoiding fines and will get worse if suspending comes into play.”

I pointed the same exact thing out yesterday, a number of players are being called for helmet to helmet contact (unnecessary roughness) when in fact they are clearly shoulder hits, which shows the players are aware of the NFL cracking down on helmet to helmet hits and are changing the way they are tackling and are STILL being called for helmet to helmet hits! It’s ridiculous.

James Harrison stated that he’s considering retirement because he simply can’t play like a LB is supposed to in his eyes. Hard to disagree with him at this point. Many will say that Harrison is just blowing off some steam with his comments of retirement. Maybe, but Harrison is like a throwback player, he clearly loves to play the game of football and hit the crap out of opposing players. In today’s NFL that’s frowned upon, I don’t blame him for being pissed off.

What we’ve really learned from these comments is – The players don’t like the crackdown. Players (y’know the guys the rules are aimed at) understand the game is played at split second speeds. Because of this, among other reasons, they won’t really be changing the way they play the game. They simply can’t, it’s simply unrealistic and stupid to start asking players to drastically change the way they play the game. How it’s always been played. As has been mentioned, defenders are now leading with the shoulder on hits in pass coverage, that should be good enough. If it isn’t, we’re going to have a serious problem.
